Meet Brittany

Brittany Bellmore, LCSW, RYT 200

Hello to you!

I would like to take this opportunity to let you know a little about me before I get to know you. This helps you to know my background and a few pieces about me so you know if we will be a good fit before we actually meet.

I grew up in Maine, and I have always loved the people and places this state has to offer. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Maine at Farmington in 2009, graduating with dual majors in Rehabilitation Services and Psychology. I had worked in therapeutic capacities throughout my undergraduate work focusing on wilderness therapy at Summit Achievement in Stow, ME, a wilderness therapy program for at-risk youth. I loved this experience, but was unsure how to go forward with my career. I took a couple of years off to figure out how to make my dreams a reality, and enjoyed exploring the Maine wilderness for a few years until I decided to move to West Virginia in 2011. This was an amazing experience, and it was incredible to get out of Maine and live amidst the wild and wonderful woods of Appalachia. I began working on my Master’s of Social Work at West Virginia University in 2011, though Maine still held a stronghold on my heart. After completing one year of my Master’s program in West Virginia, I felt and heard Maine calling me back. I was lucky to be able to transfer to the University of New England to finish my degree, and to get back to my roots.

I graduated from the University of New England in 2013 with a Masters degree in Social Work, though I have a history of working with people in therapeutic settings since 2006. I have come a long way since I began my path into Social Work more than 15 years ago! I began by working in people's homes offering family and individual support, helping with transitions to and from residential care for clients, and supporting people within the community. In 2014, I provided services for several local schools, and in 2016 I moved to the outpatient office setting. In 2018 I opened my own practice, focusing on my passions and to grow as a professional.

 About My Practice

My private practice has been focused on the mind/body connection, and how we can use mindfulness and gentle awareness of our parts for healing.  When I say “parts”, I’m not talking about our anatomical body parts - I am referring to our anxious parts, sad parts, hurt parts and so on.  There is a part of you that has brought you this far in your path to seek support.  There may still be another part that is hesitant or anxious about the process.  There may even be some parts that are hiding out, waiting to show themselves once we begin our journey.  All of our parts deserve attention and understanding.  It is important to check in with the holistic perspective to get to know the whole human, and to see how all of our parts overlap and influence each other.

As well as a therapist, I am a trained Yoga Teacher and I love to incorporate the body and breath into helping our emotions move through us. This training has helped me to gain understanding into the body, and the ways that energy is held and stored in the body, as well as ways that it may be moved or released. My training in yoga has helped me to learn a bit about the Ayurvedic lens to view the human through, while my formal education provided the clinical lens. With this perspective, we can help to heal many areas of the self.

I have formed connections with a few specialized interests and groups of people that I work well with.  I am a member of and have a passion for helping people within the LGBTQ+ community, and I have recognized some of the challenges of being part of a marginalized group. I also enjoy helping people as they go through difficult life transitions such as school, family changes, career interruptions or moving. I have strengths in working with people with anxiety and highly sensitive systems as well.

Trauma is welcome here, and I believe we all carry trauma somewhere inside of our bodies.

For some, trauma dictates their actions and the person is well aware of their past and current triggers. For others, trauma is only evident in certain situations, though they may not realize that is what is happening for them.  No matter where you are in your process, we will work together to support, build strategies and offer healing to you as a unique person.

I am also a typical human. I am a wife, mom, daughter, loyal friend and cat mom, and I hold my relationships close to my heart. I have been in Maine (residing on the original home the Abenaki and Penobscot nations) most of my life, though I love to travel and experience new places!  I grew up enjoying camping and backpacking all over the state, and I still enjoy these things as I spend time with my family and friends. I love to spend time with my family exploring the outdoors, growing nature’s treats in the garden, and cooking them up in the kitchen. I also enjoy my alone time, when I am often found doing fiber arts of crochet, knitting, and spinning wool, creating macramé, or painting. I love to spend time with myself during a long run, yoga, and meditation as well.
